Lakeland 50 (25th July 2010)
Matt was 'lucky' enough to win an entry to this event. He came 13th out of 309 starters (276 finishers) which is a very impressive performance. The full results are on the website: http://www.lakeland100.com. Well done Matt!
Matt's report:
Rocked up to Coniston Friday afternoon, hoping to get there in time for the 5:30 kick off for the 100, but the M6 traffic took care of that - missed it by 15 mins, so went up and checked straight in to the hotel. Had a nice meal there (steak and ale pie, lovely) and a couple of halves (Waggledance, and Ennerdale Blonde (brilliant beer)). Went down to registration, registered. The chap doing the kit check was amazed at the amount of food I was carrying, said it was about 3 times as much as anyone else. Had a nice massage, then off to sleep.
Up the next morning, feeling pretty good, although breakfast at the hotel started at 8:30, and cumpulsory briefing was at 9, so had to go to Wilfs for my cereal. Caught up with some of the lads I met at the recce weekend, and then onto the bus up to Dalemain Estate. Stretched, got ready and then we all started off at 12pm. Sore ankle felt ok, then it warmed up a little and had no pain from it the rest of the race. Unfortunately this was not the case for the rest of my legs.
leg 1. About 10 miles to the first checkpoint at Howtown, with only a mild hill in the way. It was when I had just started down this hill that I realised I couldn't charge off downhill like I normally do, as my legs hurt, which wasn't good at 6 miles into the race. Got to Howtown in 10th place (Sarah Rowell put in a sprint to beat me to it), grabbed some water and buttered malt loaf, and took off again.
1:33 leg time, 10.7 miles.
Onto leg 2. This goes up to the highest point of the race, High Kop at 670 metres. It's also where I started feeling extremely rough. Made it up to the top of there (called back someone who was going the wrong way, who then beat me....) then there was a lovely descent down to Haweswater, or would have been if I could run properly! Then along the side of Haweswater to Mardale Head, expexting floods of people to come past me as I was going so slow. Rocked up to the checkpoint in 8th, left 10-15 mins later in 14th. One of the guys that passed me told me at the end, "I saw a lot of rough looking people during the race, but you looked worse than the lot of them. I didn't think you'd make it to the next checkpoint, let alone finish the race".
1:55 leg time, 3:28 overall, 8.3 miles, 19 miles overall
Leg 3. After a cup of soup, a roll, 2 cups of coke, a cup of tea and some flapjack, started walking up the hill to Gatescarth Pass. Its not much fun at the best of time, but was pretty pants for me at that stage. The descent down the other side was almost the same speed as the ascent, and was contemplating pulling out as my legs were hurting so much (although, strangely, not my sore ankle). Eventually staggered into Kentmere, into the next checkpoint, and had a smoothie, a coffee, and a huge bowl of rice pudding, and a big handful of jelly babies. Still, amazingly, in 14th.
1:38 leg time, 5:07 overall, 5.9 miles, 25 miles overall
Leg 4. Snuck out of the checkpoint in 11th! Climbing out of Kentmere, the food hit. It was like getting a shot of steroids. The jelly babies hit first, then carried me until the rice pudding took over. The climb up to Garburn Pas was not so bad, althought the descent into Troutbeck was painful, it wasn't as slow as I had been. Then up and through Skellghyll Wood, into Ambleside, checked in in 11th place. Had some coke, an energy bar, couple people snuck in and out, and I left in 13th. 1:35 leg time, 6:42 overall, 7.1 miles, 32.1 overall
Leg 5. Up and over part of Loughrigg Fell and down to Loughrigg Tarn, started feeling really rough and could barely manage 10 mins/mile along the nice flat run in to Chapel Stile. What took me 40 mins on the recce took over an hour. Still in 13th, had some beef stew and another hand full of sweets. Started out trying to run again, but wasn't really happening properly, and 2 people were barely 5 mins behind me.
1:02 leg time, 7:44 overall, 4.8 miles, 36.9 overall.
Leg 5. Along the base of Lingmell Fell, felt like I had broken my arch on my right foot, so took some Ibuprofen. The 2 runners behind me were steadily closing, and not looking too bad. Knew I was coming up to the climb up to Blea Tarn, so had a Gel in preparation. The Gel, stew and Ibuprofen all kicked in at the same time, and then hammered along past Blea tarn, to the road, down the road, up and over Moss Rigg Quarry and into Tilberthwaite carpark feeling OK. Only 3 mile to go now, still in 13th with a very comfortable lead over those behind me. Quick choccie biscuit and a cup of water, and off again.
1:35 leg time, 9:19 overall, 7.7 miles, 44.7 overall
Leg 6. There's steps here, straight up the side of the hill, but wasn't too bad as I knew I was close, and was definitely going to get under 10:30. Got up to the top, the the descent down the side is very steep, and pretty painful, but wanted to get down before it was too dark to see, so pushed on a bit. Then down the road and into Coniston, felt good and opened up into the finish in
10:11. 0:51 leg time, 10:11 overall, 3.5 miles
48.2 overall. Yes, I know, not quite 50.
Quick shower, food and the best massage I have ever had.
p.s. Mel and baby were waiting at Ambleside for me, which helped spur me along, and also sent a message whilst going up the steps just after Tilberthwaite (coincidentally, at the same time I was getting more Ibuprofen out) which helped a lot.
p.p.s. Also had a phone call from my Dad whilst on the massage table which was pretty cool. Think I may have convinced him to do it next year too...
So didn't get the time I had hoped (sub 9), but managed to pull through and not retire. Came 13th out of 309 starters/276 finishers which isn't too bad, but will be going back next year to give it a proper go.
Anyone else keen?
