Peak O Trial
Report by Gary Newham:
Matty, Nick, Steve and I did the Peak O Trial yesterday (28th December) a 10 mile navigational event with 7 control points which could be found in any order from the Grouse Inn near Glossop in the Peak District.
This was my first experience of a fell navigation event and it was most enjoyable too, I did feel sorry for Nick though as he had to drag me round and put up with my moaning but I did contribute I did manage to spot two control points!!
We set off from the Grouse Inn we didn't run over Kinder but headed towards Lantern Pike where one of the control points was positioned. I was very impressed with Nick's decending skills through heather, I need more practice as I was more horizontal then vertical.
There was more ascending and descending to come and then I managed to get knee deep in bog (cue moaning) before we reached the fourth control point, Nick's mint cake and my jelly babies kept me going and I managed to get back to the finish at the pub.
Matty was his usual impressive self and was back in the pub and finished his soap, bread roll and pudding before we were back. Nick would have been faster if he didn't have to drag me round and poor Steve lost his glasses and was struggling to read the map. The local real ale was a lovely reward to a really fun and enjoyable event.
The finishing order was:
1. Matty Brennan 1:40 approx
2. Nick Lander 2:15 ish approx
3. Gary Newham 2:16 ish approx (With help from Nick)
3. Steve Wickham 3:00 ish approx (Lost his glasses and struggled to read
map)
