ParkRun Away Day

Last Sunday saw five humans and two dogs descend (or ascend, depending on where they came from) upon Rushcliffe Country Park for the first EVRC Away Day of 2025. Guy Owen led the group home in a great time of 21:11, while the course also proved the perfect stomping ground for Debbie Brown, who continued her fine ParkRun form with another PB.
Let the race be-gin

Flat course? Tick! A fun run? Tick! Gin? Tick! Tick! Tick! Sunday 4 May sees the Flat 10k Gin Fun Run take place at Stapleford Estate in Leicestershire, consisting of a 10k off-road loop through the beautiful Rutland countryside, stopping at three locations for a finely crafted gin cocktail. The £42 entry fee might seem steep, but this includes cocktails at each of the bar stops, entertainment from great bands and DJs and an event medal!
Name that tune!

The lyrics below belong to which hit record – answer at the foot of the newsletter.
There will come a time
When the love of a man is first in line
Soon the tide will turn
And this world will be a place to learn
Name that runner!

The next instalment in our new feature where we ask you to name that runner! What makes it slightly more difficult is the smiley face disguising them – answer at the foot of the newsletter.

And another thing…

In response to an 1897 newspaper report, American author, Mark Twain, wrote “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated!” In a similar vein, the life of Belgian footballer, Petko Ganchev, was commemorated by his former team with a minute’s silence last Sunday, despite Ganchev being very much alive. The former striker responded to reports with a quote that may become equally as infamous as Twain’s by saying, “When I heard the terrible news, I poured myself a small brandy.”
Answers
Name that tune!
It was, of course, the Nightcrawlers’ classic, Push the Feeling On, which was a Number 7 hit this week back in 1995.
Name that runner!

It was Kathrine Switzer. Registering under her initials rather than her full name allowed Kathrine Switzer to bypass the rule that women could not run the Boston Marathon in 1967. She did indeed start and finish the race, despite the attempts made by race director, Jock Semple himself, to physically try to remove her from the course once race organisers realized Switzer was indeed female.
