ParkRunner of the Month for September

Wayne Handley made it six ParkRunner of the Month awards for the year after amassing 20 points to take him to September’s title. Runner-up was Richard MacRae with 18 points, achieving his fourth second-place of the year. Well done both!

Cross country kicks off this weekend

This Sunday sees the opening race of the Derby Runner Cross Country League, taking place at Shipley Park. With the park hosting an abundance of cross country races into the winter, this is your chance to take on the 5-mile course ahead of it becoming the notorious quagmire that has seen many a runner (along with their glasses) disappear into the mud, never to be seen again. The race starts at 11:00am, and is free to enter (you just need to wear an EVRC vest).

Oh, what a knight!

After rubbing shoulders (almost) with the Prime Minister at this year’s Great North Run, our very own Richard MacRae was in exalted company again this week as he headed up to Bradford to be part of Sir Kevin Sinfield’s 7 in 7: The Grand Finale fundraising event for motor nuerone disease (MND). Starting on 27 September, Sir Kevin and his 7 in 7 team will have completed an ultra-marathon every day for seven days, visiting all 12 English Super (Rugby) League grounds by the time they reach Old Trafford ahead of the Super League Grand Final on 3 October. Sir Kevin was awarded a knighthood earlier this year for his fundraising efforts for MND, while, with Richard’s own charitable work and commitment to his local community, it surely won’t be long before he receives his own call up to the palace.

Wacky Races

Since 1986, the Marathon Des Sables has taken participants far beyond a simple race. With six destinations and seven formats, the event offers around ten events every year across the globe. From the Moroccan Sahara to the wild coasts of Namibia and to the mystical deserts of Jordan, each experience is a unique adventure where pushing your limits meets the discovery of extraordinary landscapes, and with an entry fee in excess of £2,000, it pushes the limits of your bank account to boot!

Name that tune!

Oh, I, I got a funny feelin’ when she walked in the room
And my, as I recall it ended much too soon

Results

Any event hosted by the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) is bound to be daunting, but this didn’t put Steve Brown off this weekend as he tackled the LDWA Forest Marathon. Steve completed the course in 7 hours and 6 minutes, finishing in joint 33rd place. A stunning effort, Steve!

Not only did James Catmur complete an ultramarathon at the weekend, but with a name like ‘Rat Race Sea to Summit Yr Wyddfa,’ you’d be right in thinking that this race is not only long, but also uphill! Starting at Caernarfon Castle at sea level, the route ascends to the summit of Wales’ highest mountain, with James completing the 29+ mile course in 7:54:22. A ginormous achievement, James!

Onto Sunday and there were yellow vests aplenty at this year’s Robin Hood Half Marathon, not to mention charity colours and our very own Superman. Reece Newman led home the team, while all did the club proud!

And another thing…

Next year’s London Marathon is going to be split across two days, with organisers saying that this will increase opportunities for ‘fun’ runners to take part in this iconic event. The question as to which day would host the championship events was decided this week, with the only fair way of choosing such a monumental decision – a game of rock, paper, scissors.

Name that tune!

“December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” is a song originally performed by the Four Seasons, written by original Four Seasons keyboardist Bob Gaudio and his future wife Judy Parker. The song features drummer Gerry Polci on lead vocals, with Frankie Valli, the group’s usual lead vocalist, singing the bridge sections and backing vocals. Released in December 1975, the song reached Number One in the UK, as well as in Canada, South Africa, and the US.
