Fell Champs kicks off this Sunday

This Sunday, 12 April, sees the start of the Fell Championships. The format will be similar to 2025, with separate men’s and ladies’ competitions with no age groups, and scoring as per the rules on our website. There will also be a separate handicap competition for the Phil Pittson Fell Handicap trophy. The races to be used are listed on the website (and in the calendar below), with the best four from 10 races to count.

The first race is the 6.9km Mike Briggs Wirksworth Incline Race. Described as a short and sharp fell race that goes straight up to a trig, then straight back down, entries are £6.50 and must be paid in advance. According to the website, the race commences, “with a gun, or enthusiastic shout,” at 11:00am.

ParkRunner of the Month for March

In a repeat of January’s ParkRunner of the Month podium, Wayne Handley is top dog with 18 points, with Richard MacRae dachshund close behind with 17. Well done both!

A warm welcome to our newest members

We welcome our latest recruits to the Yellow Army, who have joined over the last few weeks. Ania Katowski has enrolled, while our latest new man, Reece Newman, has transferred across the Erewash Canal from Long Eaton Running Club. Both make a very welcome addition to the team in time for the Summer League!

Wacky Races

Later this month, runners will embark on the River to River Relay, where teams of eight runners compete over an 80-mile course. Each runner completes three sections that range in length from 2.5 to 4 miles. The race description reads like something out of a Mark Twain novel, as it describes the meeting of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers at the southern tip of Illinois, where the land is quite unlike the rest of the state. Results

With a broken laptop and an Easter Break, there’s a few weeks of results to get through. Here goes…

The EVRC Dream Mile, which took place on Sunday 22 March, saw nine members take to the Rutland Track. Wayne Handley took gold with a cracking 6:39, swiftly followed by Richard Turner, running neck-and-neck over the first three laps, just three seconds later. Josie Ball was our leading lady, just over the eight-minute mark with 8:02. Well done everyone:

Sunday 4 April saw Nicola Photiou taking part in the East Leake Triathlon, and despite a fall, cut leg and grass growing out of her helmet, Nicki still managed to get herself across the finishing line in an excellent time of 1:58:51 in 323^rd position.

And another thing…

The last thing you want to do when working on a military vessel is to give your location away, but that’s exactly what one member of the French Navy did recently after posting a training run on Strava. French news outlet Le Monde, first reported the officer, referred to as the incredibly suspect British name of ‘Arthur’, logged their 35-minute run on the app while exercising on the deck of aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. Name that tune!

Fifty years ago this week, and the Brotherhood of Man’s ‘Save Your Kisses for Me’ was enjoying a six-week stint at the top of the charts. The song became a worldwide hit where it became the biggest-selling song of the year. Overall, it remains one of the biggest-selling Eurovision winners ever.
