A lot to catch up with

After two weeks away in lovely Northumberland, there’s a lot to catch up on. While away, I hit upon a potential new race for the club, based on a visit to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne. The three-mile tidal road is completely submerged twice a day, closing access to the island for roughly five to seven hours per tidal cycle. So, combining the ideas of ParkRun, the Handicap Race and Beat the Tram, we set a race along the tidal road, with runners setting off to finish the route based on their fastest ParkRun times. Instead of racing the tram, competitors race the incoming tide, with those failing to return in time washed perilously away into the North Sea. Who’s in?
Another Run on the ladder

Another fantastic running of The Run saw over 200 complete the 4-mile course, starting and finishing at the Navigation Inn in Breaston. It certainly attracts the regions very best runners, with George Phillips from Beeston AC coming home first in a time of 20:13, while Long Eaton Running Club’s Molly Uren was first lady back in a time of 23:44. Huge congratulations to Bob Browne on another momentous evening, and thanks to the army of volunteers on making another success of The Run.
Welcome to our two C25K graduates

Two of our recent Couch to 5k graduates have joined the ranks of EVRC over the last few weeks. Welcome to Karen Bunn and Molly Trembirth, who have both become fully-fledged members of the club.
ParkRunner of the Month for July

Congratulations to our ParkRunner of the month for July, Debbie Brown, who accumulated 21 points. Debbie beat the rest of the field by four points, with a second-place podium consisting of husband Steve Brown and Anne Browhill, and a first-time runner-up place for Rhiannon Godden. Well done all!
Please support Debbie’s incredible ParkRun milestone

Our very own Debbie Brown will be celebrating a massive 500 volunteer ParkRun appearances in the coming weeks, taking the role as Run Director at Long Eaton Junior ParkRun on Sunday 16 August. It would be great to get as many club members along to volunteer their time and efforts on the morning. Volunteers meet at 8:30am and it’s all done by 9:30/9:45am. Please let Debbie know if you can support.
Summer League comes to a close

Next Wednesday sees the grand finale of this year’s Summer League series, taking place at the reliable confines of Holme Pierrepont. The route is a slight variation to the race at the start of the series, so expect more loops around the lagoon and the added peril of more geese. As usual, please wear your club vest, with the race starting at 7:15pm.
Next up in the Fell Championships

“What’s going on in the Fell Championships?” you may ask. Take a butcher’s at the calendar and you’ll see that next up is Ricky’s Race, taking place at 7:00pm on Thursday 13 August. Organisers Matlock Athletic Club say it’s “…a friendly race with a bit of everything thrown in, with a great hill near the finish giving spectacular views over the Derwent Valley.” More information, along with the chance to enter, can be found on the Matlock AC website.
Giving back to our local community

A couple of years ago we dedicated a Wednesday night club run to the local Montrose Court food bank in Stapleford where we donated much-needed items of food. The food bank provides food, basic provisions, support and advice for those in need, and is a great way for us to give back to our local community. We’ll be running this again on Wednesday 19 August, meeting at the club at the usual time and running to the food bank to make the donation. Don’t worry – there will be cars on hand to take the donations, so you don’t have to limit yourself to light foods like marshmallows and candy floss.
The Redcar Running Festival

New Marske Harriers celebrate their 40th anniversary this year, and continue to buck the trend of big organisations charging top dollar for running event by organising road races over a variety of distances and formats that always strive to offer value for money to club runners whilst adapting to evolving technologies, standards and legislation. Their 2026 Redcar Running Festival, taking place on Sunday 27 September, includes a half marathon, 10k and 3k fun run, with the half marathon an EA Masters Qualification event. Early Bird prices end on Monday 31 August though the current entry trend suggests that the Half Marathon and 10k could be full by then. Read more and enter on the New Marske Harriers website.
Wacky Races

Every October the state of Utah opens its doors for the annual Moab 240. Participants can ‘enjoy’ over 240 miles of beautiful terrain as they travel through desert, canyons, slick rock, and two mountain ranges, all while surrounded by Canyonlands and Arches National Park. There’s also an elevation of 31,892 feet, so if you can beat the cut-off time 112 hours, registration for next year opens on Monday!

Could a copper comprehend

Another Herculean effort saw Steve Brown complete the 30-mile Birmingham Canal Canter at the weekend. Steve was even too quick for the first official checkpoint, and had to wait ten minutes until they opened! This didn’t stop a tremendous time though, with Steve officially completing the course in seven hours and ten minutes (moving time 6:41). Another amazing ultra, Steve!
Previous week’s results included Friday 17 July, which saw some outstanding running and category places at the Risley 5.7-mile trail run, organised by Long Eaton Running Club to celebrate 40 years of being the second-best running club in the area. Steve Wickham grabbed a podium 3rd place VM70 (54th overall) with a time of 52:26, while Rich Turner’s 48:17 was enough to see him 9th VM40 (31st overall). Well done gents!

And another thing…

Is there a crisis in sportsmanship across the UK? In light of the recent Clicky Ponting scandal that has rocked the local cricket scene, the Guardian looks at the increasing spate of failing etiquette across the country, including the example of Rob Sloan, who came third in the Kielder Marathon in 2011 but was stripped of the title after he travelled part of the way by bus.
Name that tune!
“Fog on the Tyne” is a 1971 album by English rock band Lindisfarne, giving the group their breakthrough in the UK. It topped the Album Chart for four weeks and remained on the chart for 56 weeks in total. A heavily reworked version of the title track, with vocals by footballer Paul Gascoigne, was released in 1990 and reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, mercifully beaten from the top spot by the Beautiful South’s “A Little Time”.
